Kava beverages, made from dried roots of the shrub Piper methysticum, have been used ceremonially and socially in the South Pacific for hundreds of years and in Europe since the 1700s. Several well-conducted human trials and meta-analysis have shown that kava can effectively treat anxiety.
Recommended Use: Used in herbal medicine to help promote relaxation.
Recommended Dose: Adult Dosage: Take 1 capsule twice daily with meals. Consult a health care practitioner for use beyond 1 month.
Cautions & Warnings: Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have any type of acute infection, if you suffer from liver disease or epilepsy, if you are using conventional sedative-hypnotics (or natural health products with similar effects), anxiolytics, MAO inhibitors, and other psychopharmacologic agents, levodopa (or other drugs for Parkinson’s disease), anti-platelet agents or if your symptoms persist or worsen. Consumption with alcohol or anti-convulsants is not recommended. Excessive use, or use with products that cause drowsiness, may impair your ability to operate a vehicle or heavy machinery. Do not use if you have high blood pressure. Discontinue use and consult a health care practitioner if you develop symptoms that may signal liver problems (e.g. unexplained fatigue, abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, dark urine, yellow eyes or skin).
