Earthy and strong ~ Chaga is a fungus that grows on birch trees in the boreal forest. It’s in symbiosis with the birch tree, helping seal wounds and keeping sick trees alive that would otherwise die. Unlike the soft fruiting bodies of common mushrooms, Chaga forms a conk (sclerotia) ~ a compact mass of hardened fungal roots.
This Chaga is wild harvested from Northern Ontario where the entire forest has been put under an organic management program. Careful gathering allows both the tree and the remaining mushroom to continue thriving after harvest.
Chaga makes an earthy and pleasant tasting tea with bold woody notes and a slight birch character imparted by the trees on which it grows.
